Lithium

The entries below that are dated from April 21, 2011 through August 2, 2011 were postings from our tests on the Lithionics brand of lithium batteries.

We have severed ties with Lithionics for several reasons that are very important to us and our business ethics and will not be following up with a second round of tests on the Lithionics batteries.

As of October 7, 2011 we began testing some LiFePO4 batteries that we had custom made for us by another manufacturer. So far the testing looks good and we will be posting our findings after we complete those tests.

Please check back in and follow our postings.

NOTE: We have decided that as of February 2012, the two brands of Lithium batteries we have tested to date are not ready for full time use in RVs. The problem to be overcome is what the Lithium battery manufacturers recommend for charging. They want the batteries charged to 14.6 volts and left there until the charging amperage tapers off to something like 1 or 2% of battery amp-hour capacity. Then they want all charging to stop ... they do not advocate a "Float" charge. This is NOT how RVs operate. We need to maintain a float voltage to power the 12 volt lights, fans, pumps, etc. AFTER the batteries are fully charged so that we can go into the night with full batteries.

There are many battery companies working on these issues and we will resume our RV centered tests when those companies have solved some of the problems. MEanwhile, we will leave these test results open for others to read.
